Description

By the dawn of the fifteenth century the slow, drawn-out decline of the Khmer Empire had been witnessed by its numerous enemies and neighbours for the best part of two hundred years. The gradual conversion to Theravada Buddhism had rendered the Khmer kings' long-held claim to the 'devaraja' (demi-god) status of their Hindu ancestors irrelevant, and no new temples or shrines had been built in their honour for generations. Angkor Thom - the twelfth century capital of Jayavarman VII and once the largest city in Southeast Asia - had been slowly abandoned over the previous century, largely in part to the combined effects of plague and its once vast irrigation network falling into disrepair, forcing thousands to flee the city and migrate south into lower Cambodia and the Mekong Delta. In 1431 the last Khmer king, Ponhea Yat, fled to Phnom Penh, leaving the ancient capital of Angkor Thom in ruins and its remaining population entirely at the whim of their new overlords - the Siamese kings of Ayutthaya.
